It’s an
active volcano, which has been erupting continuously since the sixties, having
its biggest recent eruption in May 2010. Situated very close to the ancient
capital and colonial wonder, Antigua, the volcano is a touristic attraction,
and now it seems to be a protected and controlled area since the Pacaya
National park was created, but back when I visited it in 1998, the region
wasn’t exactly the safest place on earth. The experience of the ash clouds and
rain were unforgettable though.
