The wooden churches of Maramures. ROMANIA

These eight churches from different periods show a variety of designs and craftsmanship adopted in these narrow, high, timber constructions with their characteristic tall, slim clock towers at the western end of the building, either single- or double-roofed and covered by shingles. As such, they are a particular vernacular expression of the cultural landscape of this mountainous area of northern Romania. Photos from 1992, taken in the churches of Budesti, Rozvalea and Ieud.

Sapanta’s Merry Cemetery . ROMANIA

Created on the first half of the 20^th century, the cemetery is famous by its colorful tombstones with naïve paintings depicting the lives of the people buried in a poetic manner, far away from solemnity. Photos from 2002

Băile Felix. Bihor County. ROMANIA

Everybody, their mothers and even some disoriented tourists like me, jump into the water on the popular thermal spa resort of Băile Felix, close to Oradea. That was the summer of 2002.
