Saint Bénezet
Bridge, universally known as le pont
d’Avignon was built on the 12th century, but was reconstructed several
times because of its frequent collapses during floods. Only 4 of the original
22 arches remain intact. The bridge once crossed the Barthelasse Island, where
there was a popular recreation spot (Some cafés are still there), where people
danced beneath the bridge, and not on the bridge, as suggested by the
famous song. Photos from 2009.
