Volcán Pacaya. GUATEMALA

It’s an active volcano, which has been erupting continuously since the sixties, having its biggest recent eruption in May 2010. Situated very close to the ancient capital and colonial wonder, Antigua, the volcano is a touristic attraction, and now it seems to be a protected and controlled area since the Pacaya National park was created, but back when I visited it in 1998, the region wasn’t exactly the safest place on earth. The experience of the ash clouds and rain were unforgettable though.

Tikal. GUATEMALA

Jewel of the mayan empire, this impressive megalopolis reached its peak on the IX century, with a population of about 90.000 habitants. Tikal was mysteriously abandoned around the year 950, as most of the cities of the classical period. Vegetation swallowed all it up but its ceremonial center and many of the surrounding buildings have been uncovered.

Memoires de Voyages…

Starting with probably my favorite photo, which was took at the Chichicastenango Market (Guatemala) in 1998. A totally stolen snapshot, took without looking through the visor, as the camera was on my chest. I was lucky I guess.

Photography, especially during travels has always been one of my passions, though unfortunately I’ve never had the best equipment. I didn’t have a digital camera until 2008, and yet it was only a compact one (which is by the way infinitely easier to carry on everywhere). But someone said to me that a good picture is not on the lens but on the eye of the picture-taker, so I keep on trying…
