Virgen de Guadalupe day in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas. MEXICO.

December 12th is the day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico. It’s one of the most important celebrations of Mexico. On this day, pilgrims from all around converge at the basilica on top of the hill and thousands of people gather to celebrate and to pay their respects to the virgin. The celebrations include special masses, fireworks, processions, parades and live music. On the first picture we can see some pilgrims at the end of their journey, feeling the pain on their exhausted feet, during our visit at the end of 2000.

Dom Luis Bridge, Porto. PORTUGAL

The Luís I (or Luiz I) Bridge (Portuguese: Ponte Luís I or Luiz I) is a metal arch bridge that spans the Douro River between the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia in Portugal. At the time of construction its span of 172 m was the longest on its type in the world. The second photo is the panorama of the Douro seen from this bridge. Photos from 1993

We arrived to Victoria Falls at the end of the Route of the Okavango, the travel we made this summer with KANANGA, after a 27 days-journey starting in Cape Town (South Africa). We gathered many experiences and we lived many wonderful moments: Meeting the scaring white shark, beholding the sunset from the top of Elim dune in the Namib desert, the first giraffes spotted on the Kalahari (South Africa), the moments shared with the Himba from the north of Namibia, flying over the Okavango delta in Botswana, the rhino crossing just in front of our truck in Etosha, etc…

After all that wonder, the vision of Victoria Falls from the Zimbabwe, was the ideal final chapter. But what gave sense to the whole visit was the day spent in Chinotimba, a village attached to Victoria Falls town, where live many of the people that work on the touristic sets.

We visited Chinotimba with the help of a local guide recommended by Kananga and we were incredibly well received on this little village. Some of the most unforgettable memories of this visit were the ones lived at the school, where we shared some precious moments with the young students.

Of course the Victoria Falls and all its possibilities (Helicopter tours, Rafting on the Zambezi) are great moments, but for the human side, I’d take Chinotimba, as a unique experience.

Tikal. GUATEMALA

Jewel of the mayan empire, this impressive megalopolis reached its peak on the IX century, with a population of about 90.000 habitants. Tikal was mysteriously abandoned around the year 950, as most of the cities of the classical period. Vegetation swallowed all it up but its ceremonial center and many of the surrounding buildings have been uncovered.

Eilean Donan Castle. SCOTLAND

The building of the most photographed (and cinematographed) Scottish castle started on the early 13th century. It was left abandoned at the 18th century and become a ruin, up until its restoration in the beginning of the 20th century.
