A
kasbah is a
fortress (citadel) but the word may also be
used to describe the old part of a city. A
kasbah has high walls, usually without windows and
sometimes, they were built on hilltops so
that they could be more easily defended. Having a kasbah built was a
sign of wealth of some families in the city, like
for instance Telouet, the Kasbah the Glaouis dynasty.
Almost all cities had their kasbah, this building being something
necessary for the city to survive. Most of
them don't last much due to the material used to built them, mostly
consisting in Mud, stones and pissé (Mud pressed and dried between
wooden boards). Photos from October 2012
