Palenque (Bàak' in Modern Maya) was a Maya city state in southern Mexico close to the Usumacinta river, that flourished in the 7th century. As many other cities from the classical period, it was abandoned at some point of the 9th century. After its decline it was absorbed into the jungle, but its center has been excavated and restored and is now the most famous archaeological site of the Mexican state of Chiapas. Photos from 2000.
Your pictures are beautiful. I only recently heard about Chiapas for the first time and learned how cool it would be to take a trip there. You and your readers should also take a second to look at this awesome magazine article about Chiapas here: http://www.stowawaymag.com/2011/12/discovering-chiapas/
