Monasterio de Santa Catalina, Arequipa. PERU
Santa Catalina is a Monastery of nuns of the Dominican order, built in the 16th and 17th centuries. It’s a huge complex, like a small village, with an intricate structure composed by countless small squares, patios and alleys. It’s characterized by its vividly blue and red painted walls. Probably the most photogenic religious building I have ever visited, and unquestionably one of the many wonders of Peru. Summer 2009.

The Himba. NAMIBIA
The Himba are an ethnic group of less than 50.000 people living in northern Namibia, close to the Kunene River. They are mostly nomadic, pastoral people and they breed cattle and goats. The women are famous for covering themselves with otjize, a mixture of butter fat with a strong red color, possibly used as a protection from the sun as well as for beauty purposes.
